History of the Marien-Apotheke Sillian<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Soon after the First World War<\/strong> and the separation of South Tyrol from the motherland, the desire for a pharmacy in Sillian arose. The most important reason was that the pharmacy in San Candido, which had previously belonged to the judicial district of Sillian and was geographically closest, was practically no longer accessible due to the demarcation of the border. An application for the establishment of a public pharmacy in Sillian was therefore submitted to the Lienz district authority. However, there were voices in the BH Lienz that were decidedly against such a new establishment. First and foremost, they saw a threat to the existence of the (then only!) pharmacy in Lienz – but there were also fears that the establishment of a pharmacy in Sillian could “set a precedent” and that other public facilities could then be established outside of Lienz, thereby diminishing the importance of the district capital. There were even threats of a “separation of the district of Lienz from Tyrol” if a pharmacy were to be built in Sillian! This matter even made waves as far away as Vienna. <\/p>

On May 6, 1920, the “Neue Freie Presse” reported on “the threat of the Lienz deputies in the Tyrolean parliament that the district of Lienz would join Carinthia if a pharmacy were to be built in Sillian”! Other Viennese newspapers also reported with a certain amount of malice about how far Tyrolean patriotism must already have sunk if they intended to say goodbye to Tyrol because of a new pharmacy! In this context, it should be borne in mind that a final constitution for Austria was only issued in October 1920, that there were still border changes afterwards and that Austria in general was still in a state of upheaval and consolidation at the time. So there were numerous and much more important things still to be clarified – from today’s perspective, the dispute over a pharmacy reorganization may seem somewhat bizarre…. <\/p>

In 1922<\/strong>, a license was granted after all – but the approved pharmacy was never actually opened.<\/p>

It was only after the Second World War<\/strong> that the mayor of Sillian, Johann Herrnegger (mayor from 1946 – 1962), pleaded for the absolute necessity of a public pharmacy and lobbied the responsible member of parliament. Dr. Alois Lugger and at the same time recommended Dr. Senta Zaleski as a concessionaire. He argued that she had lived nearby for years and was extremely popular with the local population. He also cited the destruction of her Viennese apartment during the war and the loss of her pharmacy in Vienna. The BH Lienz did not get in the way this time either – although it did support another candidate, namely Oskar Gernot. In April 1951, both Dr. Zaleski and Mag. Gernot submitted their license applications to the Tyrolean provincial government. On July 21, 1951, the provincial government decided in favor of Gernot on the grounds that he had more seniority. Objections from Dr. Zaleski and the mayors of Sillian and Strassen were rejected.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1952<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On May 1, 1952, the pharmacy was opened in Sillian 16. The conditions under which this took place are interesting, such as the opening hours. These were as follows: on weekdays from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm; on Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 12:00 pm. The rest of the time, the pharmacist had to be on duty at all times, although he only had an absolute minimum of staff at his disposal (for example, in 1956 “one assistant on an hourly basis”, in 1964 “one female assistant”, in 1969 “2 apprentices” and only in 1980 a full-time pharmacist). In addition, the dispensaries of the three local doctors remained open for the time being! This information shows that running a pharmacy in a rural area was a demanding business in every respect back then – and still is today, despite the significantly improved staffing situation!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1964 <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mr. Oskar Gernot passed away on 30.7.1964. After a few days of closure and several deputy managers, Mag. pharm. Eva Bernatzky was entrusted with the provisional management of the pharmacy – on November 1, 1964 with the license to operate the pharmacy. The premises soon turned out to be too small for the operation of a modern pharmacy in compliance with all the relevant official requirements and Ms. Bernatzky looked for a larger business premises, which she found after some time in the court building at Marktplatz No. 8, which had been vacant since the court was closed in 1967. The building was extensively adapted and the pharmacy moved into the new building on July 4, 1970. Ms. Bernatzky also added a drugstore to the pharmacy and succeeded in significantly increasing the number of staff, attracting new customer groups and positioning the pharmacy’s good reputation in neighbouring South Tyrol. Unfortunately, it remained – and remains so to this day! – the obligation to be on permanent standby, which represents a significant burden for the company.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2002 - 2024<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On 1.1.2002, the pharmacy was transferred to Mr. Mag.pharm. Wolfgang Truger (born 1954 in Graz), who then owned it until 30.9.2024. With the current owner Mrs. Mag.pharm. Angelika Ortner, a native of East Tyrol has now been entrusted with the management of the pharmacy for the first time and we wish her all the best for a successful and prosperous future! <\/p>
